The present sheet was among a group of around five hundred sketches, drawings from nature, and finished watercolours from De Wint's studio that were sold at auction and dispersed the year after the artist's death. Comparable studies of weeds in water by de Wint are in the National Galleries of Scotland (see David Scrase, Drawings & Watercolours by Peter De Wint, exhibition catalogue, Cambridge, 1979, p.13, no.30, pl.16 and the Usher Gallery, Lincoln (see Walter Armstrong, Memoir of Peter De Wint, 1888, pl.8).
