Bonington travelled with his friend and fellow artist Alexandre Colin. A group of approximately seventy-seven sketches from this trip were bequeathed to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris by Atherton Curtis. They include similar sketches of daily life in Dunkerque (for examples of these drawings, see Noon, op.cit., nos. 288-299)
