De Wint exhibited two views of Whitby at the Society of Painters in Watercolours, in 1833, no.224 and in 1843, no.102. The latter was exhibited with a quote from Sir Walter Scott's The Marmion, canto VI-The Battle 'Oft did the cliff and swelling main, Recall the thoughts of Whitby's fane'. Whilst the present large watercolour is clearly an exhibition work, it is not clear whether it is either of these.

His success as a drawing master often overshadows De Wint's brilliance as a watercolourist and it is works such as these, with their extraordinary sophisticated handling that reaffirms his position as a Master of British watercolours.
