William Callow (1812-1908)
View of Ullswater looking towards Patterdale

Signed lower left: W. Callow/1836 and inscribed verso: Ulleswater/Cumberland
Watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour, stopping out and scratching out
18.2 by 25.1 cm., 7 by 9 3/4 in.

Callow is not recorded as visiting the Lake District in the 1830s and this may be based on a work by Copley Fielding. Fielding was an early influence on Callow. In 1824 he gave Callow a ticket for the exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours which made a great impression on the young man. see Reynolds p.3 for more.....

Six of Copley Fielding's exhibits in 1824 were views of Ullswater. The style and composition of the present watercolour is very reminiscent of Copley Fielding's work.
