This on-the-spot sketch is traditionally attributed to John Constable's youngest child Lionel Bicknell Constable, although it does not directly relate stylistically to any known work by him. Lionel taught himself to paint by studying his father's work and was probably the most talented of his siblings exhibiting at the Royal Academy and British Institution. His work is sometimes mistaken for his father's.
