John Linnell (1792-1882)
Study of a Boatyard by the Thames
Signed lower left: J Linnell f.
Black and white chalk on blue paper
16.3 by 24 cm., 6 ¼ by 9 ½ in.
The atypical signature on this drawing suggests this is an early work dating from circa 1805-10. The young Linnell was introduced to John Varley who encouraged him to draw directly from nature. He went sketching along the Thames with other young artists he had met at Varley's house such as William Henry Hunt, Turner of Oxford, William Mulready and Varley's younger brother Cornelius.
