Born in Edinburgh, Heriot studied drawing at the Woolwich Military Academy under Paul Sandby. From 1799 to 1816 he was deputy Postmaster General of Canada and travelled widely through the country. His Canadian watercolours are much sought after. On his return he travelled widely in Europe.
