Edward Lear (1812-1888)
Pallanza, Lago Maggiore

Signed with monogram and dated 1879 lower right and inscribed lower left: Pallanza
Watercolour heightened with white
17.8 x 37.8 cm., 7 by 15 in.

In this exceptional finished watercolour Lear portrays the setting of Pallanza, a town on the shore of Lago Maggiore, sited opposite the celebrated Borromean islands of Isola Bell and Isola Borromeo. At the height of his powers, he combines brilliant effects of colour and paper in a powerful masterpiece of landscape art, so different from his pen, ink and wash sketches made on the spot. The framing of the scene with the foreground vegetation is no lie, for the shores of the lake were wooded.
Among the most successful of Lear's finished works, this beautiful watercolour benefits from the outstanding freshness of the colours.
