James Thomas Linnell was the second son of John Linnell (see nos. 70 and 71). He entered the Royal Academy schools in 1840 and exhibited there between 1850 and 1888. His works are strongly influenced by his father but he was a talented artist in his own right. His sketches, like the present drawing, are often executed in brightly coloured chalk.
