Drawn by the 75 year old David Cox in 1858, this is one of his last known works and shows the artist at his most atmospheric and impressionist. Other works from 1858 are more precisely dated - `Scene in a Lane' (British Museum) is dated 29th April 1858 and `Crossing the Moor' (Rhode Island School of Design) `September 1858' (see Scott Wilcox, Sun, Wind, and Rain - The Art of David Cox, 2008, nos. 120 and 121, ill. p.236).
