The castle was probably built by the O'Donnell family in the early fifteenth century but by the 1440s it belonged to the MacSweeney family. The castle changed hands repeatedly in the seventeenth century during the Anglo-Irish wars for the control of Ireland. Eventually the castle was bought by the English army officer General George Vaughan Hart (1752-1832) and it remained in his family until 1843.){kind=link}
