Auckland Castle was the home of the Bishops of Durham from the late twelfth century until 2012 when the castle was sold. It has since been restored and re-opened by the Auckland Project. These watercolours are part of a group of views of Auckland Castle by Smith, all of the same size. A view of the Deercot in the grounds of Auckland Castle was with Sotheby's in 1995 (12
th April, lot 76) and another was with the Leger Galleries in 1978 (exhibition November to December 1978, no.38).
