18.3 by 23.3 cm., 7 x 9 in.

This drawing shows Altenahr and Burg Are with the Schwarzes Kreuz and the wooden bridge over the Ahr (the Ahr is a tributary of the Rhine). The town of the Altenahr lies to the left of the sketch beneath the ruins of the tenth century castle. Turner explored many of the Rhine's minor tributaries on different occasions. There are a number of sketches of the Ahr in the Turner Bequest (TB CCCXL1V 39r and v, 43 r and v, 44v, 45r, 46r, and v97r and v, 98r and v, 99-106).
The drawing belongs to one of Turner's last major European tours in the early 1840s.

We are grateful to Cecilia Powell for her help in cataloguing this drawing.
