Standing on the left bank of the Rhine near Koblenz, Stolzenfels Castle, dating originally from the13th century, was rebuilt by Frederick William IV of Prussia in the 1830s.

Callow first visited the Rhine in 1844 and his first exhibited view of Stolzenfels dates from 1864. A view of Stolzenfels by Callow was included in an album presented by the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours to Queen Victoria in 1887 (see Jan Reynolds, William Callow, 1980, pl. 98, ill.).
