F. G. Stephens describes Hunt's early watercolours as comprising 'subtle and comparatively sober tints, their exquisite rendering of light and shade their chiaroscuro and their tender toning' (F.G. Stephens, Fraser's Magazine, p. 532). These early watercolours demonstrate Hunt's early schooling in the traditions of 18th Century watercolour painting, so different from the later style that the artist adopted.
Hunt found early inspiration in the farms and landscapes around his maternal relations near Basingstoke and in the surroundings of Bushey, where he was a regular visitor, staying with Dr Thomas Monro.
