John Middleton (1827-1856)
A ruined Abbey

Watercolour over pencil
25.1 by 34.6 cm., 9 ¾ by 13 ½ in.

Middleton was the best of the second generation of Norwich School artists working in a confident and free style specializing in wooded landscapes, rocky streams and country barns. He died of consumption aged only 29.

Stylistically this relates closely to Middleton's `Clearing with a Lumber Mill' in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York which is dated to circa 1847.
