This watercolour, in his early style, appears to date from his first Venice trip in 1835 in the company of the younger artist Edward Ellis. After crossing the Channel in late July, he visited Paris and reached Geneva on 26th October. From there they continued to Milan and Verona before arriving in Venice. It was the beginning of a love affair with the city which he returned to on many occasions, the last time being in 1865
