This dates from Girtin's tour of Dorset and Devon in the summer of 1797. His exact itinerary is unknown but two views of Weymouth and Berry Pomeroy Castle, Devon, were sold at Christie's from the Eliot collection on 20th November 2013, lots 272 and 273. Girtin and Loshak (op.cit.) also record views of Abbotsbury and Lyme Regis in Dorset and Exeter and Totnes in Devon.
Teignmouth stands on the north bank of the river Teign, Devon, where it enters the sea, about fourteen miles south of Exeter. Girtin is looking north along the Den Promenade with the church of St Michael, which was rebuilt in the nineteenth century, visible among a group of houses.
