This is one of two drawings that Danby made of his sons in around 1828. He had at least ten children, seven by his wife and three by Ellen Evans, of which eight were boys. The second is recorded in the collection of Robert Flynn Johnson (see Hazlitt, Independent Eye - Drawings from the Collection of Robert Flynn Johnson, 2026, p.76-77, no.30, ill.).
