Johnson was born in Birmingham and was taught by William James Müller on his arrival in London, In 1843 he accompanied Müller on a four month trip to Lycia (now Turkey). He also visited North Wales with David Cox in 1844. He travelled extensively in Europe and appears to have visited Greece in the late 1850s and subsequently exhibited a number of views of Athens.
