    It has been suggested that this is a view looking north from Ditchling Beacon near Lewes on the Sussex Downs.

     

    Moore was born in York, the ninth son of the portrait painter William Moore, and made his name as a marine artist. This is closer in subject to his earlier work of the 1850s which are in a Pre-Raphaelite style
