    Duncanís early career was as an engraver, primarily of sporting and marine subjects and from 1843 to 1851, he was on the staff of the Illustrated London News. The present group of  carefully observed drawings of boats demonstrates Duncanís delicacy and precision of line, for which he was celebrated. They are part of a group of sketches of boats drawn on Mumbles Beach, South Wales.

    watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour on grey paper 15 by 26.8cm., 6 by 10 inches

    Duncan depicts Waterloo Bridge from the east with the Shot Tower (built 1826) beyond on what is now the site of the Royal Festival Hall. The Bridge was designed by John Rennie (1761-1820) and was opened on 18th June 1817, the second anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. It was demolished in 1936 after it became unsafe.

    The Prince was launched at Greenwich on 4th July 1788 and despite being at the Battle of Trafalgar saw relatively little action. She was broken up in 1837. She is reported by one captain to have sailed `like a haystack.í
